MAYOR ARLENE CALLS BRGY OFFICIALS “LIVING HEROES”
Chiz opposes SK abolition
CITY OF SANTA ROSA, LAGUNA – City Mayor Arlene Arcillas-Nazareno likened the newly-elected barangay ang Sangguniang Kabataan officials as “living heroes” as they took their oath of office at the SM City Santa Rosa Event Center on death anniversary of National Hero Andres Bonifacio on November 30, 2010.
Arcillas-Nazareno also called on the new barangay and SK officials to unite and share in her administration’s goal of building a ONE CITY WITH ONE VISION, exhorting them to “embrace public service” and accept the responsibility with commitment to serve their constituents.
In the May 2010 synchronized national and local elections, Mayor Arcillas-Nazareno ran her campaign on the slogan ONE CITY, ONE VISION calling on a more active participation of the people in governance, making the city government more transparent and accountable. She also ran on the platform called PEOPLE’S AGENDA, which is a program based on the consensus built with various people’s organizations and non-government organizations in the city.
The first female mayor won her second-term convincingly with a majority victory and posting the widest margin in the city’s electoral history. Her running-mate, Vice Mayor Arnel Gomez, also won, while nine (9) of her councilors took the majority of the 10-seat Sangguniang Panlungsod.
Adding to her call, she also emphasized the role to the barangay as “the bridge” between the City Government and the people “to efficiently deliver our basic services, promote peace and unity to continue the development of each barangay to contribute the city’s development.
The mayor also reminded the officials of the “unique opportunity” given to them by their constituents to guide them towards development, saying “Kaya’t inaasahan po ng inyong lingkod at ng buong Lungsod ng Santa Rosa na susuklian ninyo ng tapat na paglilingkod at kapaki-pakinabang na program ang tiwala at pagkakataon na ibinigay sa inyo ng mamamayan at ng ating Panginoong Diyos.” (“The City of Santa Rosa and I expect you to repay with dedication and effective programs the trust given to you by the people and by God.”)
Senator Chiz nixes SK abolition
Meanwhile, Senator Francis Esudero expressed his opposition to the move to abolish the Sangguniang Kabataan, saying that it is “unfair” since there are also “palpak” (ineffective) congressmen but no one has called for the abolition of the House of Representatives.
He stressed that we should fill up what is lacking and correct what is wrong, and that “abolishing an institution and a right already given to the youth is not the solution.”
The senator also called on the SK officials to be more determined. “Bakit namin di kayo bibigyan ng pagkakataon na tumulong sa paghubog ng bansang ito dahil kayo naman talaga ang mag mamay-ari, magmamana, at mabubuhay sa Pilipinas na aming ihahabilin at iiwan sa kamay ninyo bilang mga lider na talaga ng bansa.”
Peaceful barangay elections
A total of 18 barangay chairpersons took their oath of office. Of them, 10 were re-elected, one of whom ran unopposed. The barangay and SK elections last October 25 was held in this city without any major incident. The local office of the Commission on Elections described it generally as “peaceful.”
The oath of the newly-elected barangay and SK officials were witnessed by their families and supporters who filled the SM City Santa Rosa Event Center.
Also present during the ceremonies Department of Interior and Local Government Provincial Director Lionel L. Dalope, Vice Mayor Arnel Gomez and members of the City Council.
